$80,000 Grant Will Fund Completion of Trail’s Master Plan

(Dallas-July 19, 2010) - The Friends of the Santa Fe Trail was recently informed that they have been approved for a major grant from the North Texas Council of Governments.   The $80,000 grant, coupled with a $20,000 matching donation from the Friends of the Santa Fe Trail, will be used to help complete the Trail’s Master Plan.  The Grant application was prepared by the architecture firm Good Fulton and Ferrell.

The Amenities and Enhancement Master Plan is the next step in the evolution of the Santa Fe Trail from an abandoned railway to a thriving and beautiful hike and bike trail.  The plan will include multiple community meetings to get direct input from neighbors and users and will serve as the vision for the trail enhancement phase that will be ongoing over the next 20 years. The NTCOG grant money will be used to fund the land use study, which is expected to begin in late Spring 2010.

“Nothing gets done without a plan and this will be a big boost to our campaign to raise money for the trail master plan,” said Chris Angarola, President of the Friends of the Santa Fe Trail.  “We are very excited about the progress that we have made up to now, and this Master Plan will insure that the Santa Fe Trail will have a great future and be among the very top hike and bike trails not only in Dallas, but in the United States.”

The Santa Fe Trail is an exciting and important four-mile link connecting Downtown Dallas with White Rock Lake.  It currently connects to the 14+ Mile White Rock Bike Trail System and will stretch from Downtown Dallas to LBJ and soon, with the competition of the Cotton Wood Trail, will allow riders to go from Plano all the way to Downtown Dallas solely on bike trails. This trail system will be a jewel for East Dallas; boosting the quality of life and yet another notable attraction for its residents.

The Friends of the Santa Fe Trail is now in the process of collecting the required matching funds for this grant and for the full Master Plan Design from individuals, businesses and grants.  To learn more about the plan, upcoming events and membership levels, please visit our website at www.FriendsofSantaFeTrail.org.
